Julia Bechtolsheimer is the founder and CEO of Unit Nutrition where she pioneered a carb-rinsing beverage. As highlighted in a Bike Envy article, Julia Bechtolsheimer’s product, Unit Rinse, is a carbohydrate solution designed to be held in the mouth and rinsed for between five to 10 seconds, before drinking, or discharging.
The science supporting this technique reveals the presence of receptors in the human mouth which are stimulated by contact with
carbohydrate. These receptors send signals to the brain, activating centers responsible for feelings of motivation, reward and motor control. This results in an immediate physiological boost in power and energy- typically to the magnitude of 3-5%. This concept of fueling the body via activating the brain is known as 'Cognitive Fueling' and is a popular technique for high performance athletes. This natural way of fueling is unique as its immediate, and has no crash or side effects.
More recent studies demonstrate the mental benefits of carb-rinsing- ranging from improved reaction speeds to enhanced concentration and mental focus, and even a boost in will-power. Given this literature, the applications of carb-rinsing are beginning to expand well beyond exercising to include the student studying for exams, the office worker needing a healthy pick me up at their 3pm slump, and surgeons who require the ultimate mental clarity and focus throughout long days and nights in the ER.
